On the landing is a fascinating set of fourteen paintings showing the intermingling of various races in Mexico under Spanish Colonial rule. Painted by Juan Rodriguez Juarez in about 1720, they are one of the earliest known sets of ethnological paintings.
On the stairs hangs a rare and beautiful English pile carpet. This is one of the earliest known carpets of the seventeenth century which omitted the heraldic devices generally found in the work of the earlier periods. On an apple green ground there is a rich pattern of scrolling stems bearing a variety of flowers, fruit and insects. The date 1614 is woven in the lower border.
